On Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 2:40 am, Eric Carballo was shot while he exited a vehicle in the 500 block of Southgate Avenue in the Aragona section of Virginia Beach. He died from his injury. His body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office where the cause of death was a gunshot wound with the manner of death a homicide.

On Monday, June 28, 2004 at 7:56 am, Police, Fire, and Paramedics responded to the 1100 block of Newcombe Road for a reported gunshot wound. A man was found lying in the front yard of a residence with a gunshot wound. He advised there were two more family members inside the home who had also been shot. As the police officers entered the home finding the other wounded victims, a fire was discovered. The two victims’ were removed from the burning home and were examined by paramedics only to find they had died from their injuries. The fire department extinguished the fire. The injured man was transported to a local hospital where he was treated. The deceased were identified as 29 year old Lois Schmidt and 7 year old Jonathan Vetrano. Both lived in the 1100 block of Newcombe Road. Three family pets were also inside the home at the time this attack occurred, two dogs had been shot, one died and the other survived. Lois Schmidt was a 29 year old white female who had brown eyes, brown shoulder length hair, 5’ 4’’ tall weighing 142 pounds.

On Saturday morning, June 30, 1973, the bodies of two white females, aged 19, were found brutally murdered in a motel cottage located at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Both girls were vacationing from the area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled these deaths as homicide. The cottage where this violent attack occurred has been destroyed and replaced with new motels and shops.

She was a 24 year old white female who had blue eyes and blonde hair, 5’ 5’’ tall, weighing 150 pounds.

On Wednesday, May 15, 1986 at 6:30 am, Roberta Walls’ body was found in the field behind Old Donation Elementary School located in the 1000 block of Ferry Plantation Drive. She was found with obvious signs of trauma due to a violent assault. Roberta’s body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. Her death was the result of homicide. Investigators determined Roberta had last been seen alive the night before at the Bayside Public Library located across the street from the location of Roberta’s murder. She was known to frequent the Aragona area of Virginia Beach and the Ocean View area of Norfolk. Roberta was a 22 year old white female who worked as an office worker. She had hazel eyes, shoulder length brown hair and stood 5’ 3’’ tall weighing 134 pounds. Roberta had tattoos on her arm and abdomen.

On Friday, May 16, 1975 at five minutes past midnight, Police received a call for shots fired in the 200 block of 10th Street. Upon arrival, Joseph Kelly was found suffering from a gunshot. He was transported to Virginia Beach General Hospital where he died from his wound. His body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office where the cause of death was ruled a homicide. A yellow 1972 or 1973 model Chevrolet with large whitewalls was seen in the area occupied by two black males. Investigators have not been able to establish the motive for the shooting. Joseph Kelly was 20 year old white male who was in the U.S. Navy stationed at Dam Neck Naval Base. He was thin built and stood 5’ 5’’ tall weighing 130 pounds, brown eyes and blonde hair.

On Friday, May 9, 2003 at 5:30 pm, 40 year old Andre Heckstall was standing in the parking lot in front of the Dollar Tree located in the 600 block of Newtown Road speaking to an unknown black male when he was shot. Police and Rescue were dispatched to the scene where the victim was found bleeding and unconscious. He was transported to the hospital where he died a short time later from his wound. The state Medical Examiner’s Office determined Mr. Heckstall died from a gunshot wound with the manner of death a homicide. Andre was a 40 year old black male who had brown eyes, black and gray hair, black moustache with a gray beard, 6’ 2’’ tall weighing 193 pounds.

On Tuesday evening, April 2, 1991, Joseph “Stinky” Mayhan had been seen walking in the area of Carolina Avenue and Arctic Avenue. He was a 32 year old black male who was dressed in a dark blue sweater, off white pants and white topsider styled shoes. Mr. Mayhan was found lying in a grassy area in the 700 block of Arctic Avenue. His body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. The cause of death was due to a gunshot wound to the chest with the manner of death a homicide. Joseph was a 32 year old homeless black male who had brown eyes, black hair, thin build, 5’ 10’’ tall weighing 145 pounds.
