The Bartow County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia State Patrol and the GBI are involved in the investigation of the drive-by shooting of a Cartersville businessman that occurred around 7:30 Wednesday morning, January 20, 1993, onHighway 41 just south of Adairsville. The victim, 45 year old Johnny Mitchell Jenkins, owner of Jenkins Transport in Adairsville, was traveling north on Highway 41 when he apparently was shot from another vehicle near the intersection of CCC Road . Jenkins' vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, which initially gave the appearance of a routine traffic accident. It was discovered later at Floyd Medical Center that in addition to injuries sustained in the collision, Jenkins had been shot several times with a shotgun. Investigators believe this was not a random shooting but a planned hit on Mr. Jenkins. They are looking into the possibility that it may be connected to his business dealings. An unusual twist to this case is that a niece (by marriage) of Mr. Jenkins was injured in a drive-by shooting that occurred the night of July 21, 1992, around 9:00 p.m. while she was traveling on Halls Station Road from Adairsville to her home in Kingston. A shotgun was also used in this shooting. Investigators are looking into the possibility of these two shootings being connected. The cause of this crash can be attributed to at least one known fact. Ms. Tanner was struck by an unknown vehicle, believed to be a motorcycle, and being driven by an unknown person. Multiple videos were collected from businesses that showed two motorcycles traveling through the area during the time of the crash. Video obtained from Beachbreak by the Sea corroborates the witnesses' account of the two motorcycles passing a Mustang in the area of Hills Road just prior to the crash. Video collected from the sunrise Condos, just east of the crash site, shows two motorcycles eastbound at the time of the crash. Investigators with the Traffic Homicide Unit and the Criminal Investigations Division also followed up on multiple leads and tips. This resulted in several interviews and photos of different motorcycles being obtained. None of the leads or tips were instrumental in identifying and locating a suspect in this case.
