On Saturday, May 4, 1996 at approximately 4:57 pm the body of Mae Edith Thornton, a 34 year old black female, was discovered in the wooded area of 1600 SE 4 Ave. laying face down, She appeared to have been there for some time. She was last seen at 12:30 am that morning. The victim's uncle said victim Thornton came by his house at 1:00 am but he was in the shower and he didn't let her in. The victim was last seen wearing a pink sweater over a blue shirt, blue jeans, white sneakers and no sock at 11:00 pm. the evening before. Ellen Ruth Fried, age 26, was last seen talking on a payphone outside of a convenience store in Claremont on July 22, 1984. Her skeletal remains were found in a wooded area next to the Sugar River in the Kelleyville area of Newport, NH on September 19, 1985. The autopsy revealed the cause of death to be undetermined because of the skeletal remains that were found. However, the circumstance of her disappearance and the findings at the scene were consistent with Ellen having been sexually assaulted before her death. The case has been treated as a homicide.
