Cold Case Spotlight

Update: April 2017 - A 23-year-old Lakeland man was sentenced to 13 years in prison Friday after pleading guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Jamal Fleming. A Polk County grand jury indicted Sidney Lee Mells on first-degree murder in January 2016 in the death of Jamal Fleming two years earlier. Fleming, 33, was pumping gas at a Chevron station on Memorial Boulevard in Lakeland when he was shot once in the head. Mells faced a life sentence had he been convicted of first-degree murder. On Tuesday, April 19, 1994 at 3:00 am, Robert’s body was discovered lying in the alley in the 5800 block of East Hastings Arch. Police and Rescue arrived on scene and found Robert suffering from a gunshot to the head. His body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. The manner of death is homicide. Robert was a 31 year old black male who had brown eyes, black hair, full beard, and moustache, 6’ 3’’ tall weighing 230 pounds.
