Arnold Hayes was running for Maries County Sheriff in July, 1972 when he was ambushed, shot and killed while sitting outside his home in South Central Missouri. Authorities arrested 2 men in connection with Mr. Hayes' murder but the charges were later dropped "pending further investigation". No charges have been filed since.
