On June 17,1970, there was an attempted holdup of a Brinks armored car outside of Zayre's Department Store on Beach Blvd. The gunmen ambushed the Brinks messenger as he exited the store. Gunfire was exchanged and the messenger sought safety in the store. The Brinks driver, George Schwender, was struck in the exchange and died. Harry Schenck was shot but survived. Schenck died on February 10, 2006 following complications with the old wounds.
