Deputies responded to a shooting at the Audoubon Village Mobile Home Park. The victim was returning home when he was confronted by two unknown black males with handguns demanding money and drugs. Shelva Ferree lived next door to the victim and observed the confrontation. She and her boyfriend started to approach the victim when one of the suspects shot her and her boyfriend; she died as a result of a gunshot wound, her boyfriend survived. The suspects then shot the victim before fleeing the area in a silver, Chevrolet Impala. The following news clipping was published in the Naples Daily News on October 4, 1974. “Taxi Operator Slain – JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – The owner-operator of a small taxicab company found shot to death under the approach to the Hart Bridge over the St. Johns River was apparently the victim of a robbery-slaying, police say. Officers said they found the body of Joseph Roy Davis, 40, early Thursday. A taxi Davis had been operating Wednesday night was found abandoned in South Jacksonville, several miles away.
