The victim Elwin “Larry” Costine was last seen early on the morning of May 3, 1992, when he dropped a friend off after having been to a rodeo the night before. He was last seen with Melissa Jo Sermons, who he was reportedly dating. On May 4, 1992, Costine was found in his residence, murdered. He had been shot several times. At the time he was discovered, there was no sign of Sermons at his residence. Her family learned that she did not return home after leaving with him to attend the rodeo. Foul play is also suspected in Sermons’ disappearance. On December 7th, 2013, deputies responded to a call of shots fired in the area of 39th Street and South Orange Blossom Trail. They were flagged down by an individual who alerted them to a victim on the back porch of 1338 39th Street. The victim was discovered unconscious and suffering from several gunshots wounds. On February 26, 1993 Manchester police were called to the rear of the Lafayette Club on Canal Street for a reported shooting. Upon arrival, police found the victim, Diethelm Baumann, age 30, suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. Baumann died immediately from the wound. An extensive investigation spanning several months was conducted into this incident. Police have identified the assailant from a description provided by a female companion of the victim as being a white male, with a moustache and dark hair, last seen driving a pick up truck. The arrests were announced by Sheriff Rick Wells during a press conference at the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office District 3 Office at 10 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2020.
