On September 30, 2009, Officers responded to 2049 Hillsborough Ave due to multiple shots fired. They located Mr. Rains with multiple gunshot wounds. Witnesses stated that Mr. Rains and several males were playing cards when a late model Ford Crown Vic pulled up to the scene. It was reported that three black males jumped out of the vehicle and started shooting.
