Cold Case Spotlight

On November 16, 2007 around 3:30am, Crandall "Jack" Reed sat in his taxi cab in the parking lot of the Boy Scouts of America building on Edgewood Ave in Jacksonville, FL when an unidentified car pulled up and tried to block him in. As Reed attempted to escape by driving behind the building a suspect jumped out of the unknown car and began shooting. The victim was able to drive himself to convenience store a few blocks away where police found him and started CPR. Crandell "Jack" Reed died at the hospital a short time later. Detectives have never made an arrest or publicly named a suspect. UPDATE - On December 23, 2019, Eddie Rhiles pleaded guilty to killing Joseph Back and was sentenced to 22 years in prison. According to News4Jax.com, At first, Rhiles denied being in Back’s house that night and pleaded not guilty. Later, however, he apologized to the victim’s family and pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder charge. On August 6, 2019 the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of Eddie Lee Rhiles, now 69 years old in the 1991 murder of 84-year-old Joseph Back. On July 12, 1991 Joseph Back was stabbed to death during a burglary in his home. The elderly man was found dead during a wellness check.
