On Monday, June 28, 2004 at 7:56 am, Police, Fire, and Paramedics responded to the 1100 block of Newcombe Road for a reported gunshot wound. A man was found lying in the front yard of a residence with a gunshot wound. He advised there were two more family members inside the home who had also been shot. As the police officers entered the home finding the other wounded victims, a fire was discovered. The two victims’ were removed from the burning home and were examined by paramedics only to find they had died from their injuries. The fire department extinguished the fire. The injured man was transported to a local hospital where he was treated. The deceased were identified as 29 year old Lois Schmidt and 7 year old Jonathan Vetrano. Both lived in the 1100 block of Newcombe Road. Three family pets were also inside the home at the time this attack occurred, two dogs had been shot, one died and the other survived. ​Jonathan Vetrano was a 7 year old white male who had bright brown eyes, short brown hair. He was 4’ 5’’ tall weighing 92 pounds. He was Lois Schmidt’s son.​

On Friday, August 19, 1983, the bodies of Joan Zwingman and Christine Pilczak were recovered from the Chesapeake Bay by the Coast Guard and transported to the Coast Guard Station on Ferry Road. Pilot Boat operators had notified the Coast Guard of two bodies floating in the water. Investigators were able to discover both victims traveled from New Jersey to Virginia Beach to attend a convention related to their employment. The victims had been seen the night before, August 18, 1983 at 7:00 pm. Both women were not wearing clothing made for swimming. They had sustained injuries prior to their death. The bodies were transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. Joan and Christine died from drowning and the case ruled a homicide. Joan Zwingman was a 26 year old white female who had green eyes and long brown hair. She was 5’ 6’’ tall weighing 141 pounds.
