On June 17,1970, there was an attempted holdup of a Brinks armored car outside of Zayre's Department Store on Beach Blvd. The gunmen ambushed the Brinks messenger as he exited the store. Gunfire was exchanged and the messenger sought safety in the store. The Brinks driver was struck in the exchange and died.
