On the evening of January 10, 2001, after 9:00p.m., Ruth Ann was seen leaving church in Sopchoppy, Florida. Later that same evening, a caller reported a house fire to the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office. Firefighters worked throughout the night to put the fire out and discovered Ruth Ann's body early the next morning on January 11. Initially no foul play was suspected, however, after receiving the autopsy report, investigators learned that she had died prior to the fire. Following numerous leads, investigators learned that a vehicle, possibly some type of pickup truck (no further description), was seen leaving the crime scene at approximately 9:45 p.m., on the night of the fire. The vehicle pulled out of Chason Road onto Smith Creek Road, CR 375 and headed toward Highway 20. There is a reward offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the arson and homicide of Ruth Ann.
