Cold Case Spotlight

21-year old Diane Schofield's badly decomposed body was found on July 10, 1975 in the trunk of her 1966 AMC Rambler in a parking lot near the Des Moines airport. Her wrists and ankles were bound and she had been strangled with a strip of knotted cloth. Robbery does not appear to have been the motive as she was found with her watch and jewelry still on. Ms. Schofield was last seen by a close friend around 9:30pm on July 4, 1975, although there have been some witnesses that reported seeing her a few days later. Confusion surrounding the time and location of the death have made it difficult for investigators. Though police have admitted to having a suspect in the case, no arrest has ever been made. Update - September 2021: The Metropolitan Police Department arrest John Carrington, 53, and charged him in the murder of Reginal Gaither. Carrington was also linked to two other cold cases dating back to 1992. He also killed his mother and was arrested in a recent robbery and stabbing incident just a week before being arrested in this case.
