The Bartow County Sheriff's Office, the Georgia State Patrol and the GBI are involved in the investigation of the drive-by shooting of a Cartersville businessman that occurred around 7:30 Wednesday morning, January 20, 1993, onHighway 41 just south of Adairsville. The victim, 45 year old Johnny Mitchell Jenkins, owner of Jenkins Transport in Adairsville, was traveling north on Highway 41 when he apparently was shot from another vehicle near the intersection of CCC Road . Jenkins' vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, which initially gave the appearance of a routine traffic accident. It was discovered later at Floyd Medical Center that in addition to injuries sustained in the collision, Jenkins had been shot several times with a shotgun. Investigators believe this was not a random shooting but a planned hit on Mr. Jenkins. They are looking into the possibility that it may be connected to his business dealings. An unusual twist to this case is that a niece (by marriage) of Mr. Jenkins was injured in a drive-by shooting that occurred the night of July 21, 1992, around 9:00 p.m. while she was traveling on Halls Station Road from Adairsville to her home in Kingston. A shotgun was also used in this shooting. Investigators are looking into the possibility of these two shootings being connected. On Tuesday, April 3, 2007, gunfire erupted in the 6000 block of Wesleyan Drive. Responding police units found the body of a black male lying in the yard of a residence suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics transported the victim to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he died a short time later. The State Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy and determined the death to be a homicide. Investigators have identified the victim as 46 year old Russell Grant Valentine Jr. of the 6000 block of Wesleyan Drive, Virginia Beach. He was a black male who had brown eyes, black hair, 6’ 1’’ tall weighing 200 pounds
