On May 16, 1997, 61-year-old Murray “Hoppy” Delong was found dead in front of his storage shed located at 911 Munn Avenue in Lakeland. Delong had been shot one time in the upper chest. A larger projectile had gone through the door and was recovered from the storage shed. On 08-20-06, the complainant was driving down a dirt road (Alton Box Rd. W.) when he observed what appeared to be human remains, later identified to the victim. Police were called to the scene. Homicide detectives responded. A further search of the wooded area resulted in no other human remains. Detectives were later informed that there was no trauma to the remains. In 2010, positive I.D. was determined. The victim had been reported missing by his mother on 7-3-06. Several leads were followed and interviews conducted by detectives.
